Safety Culture
We are working closely with the UK Chamber of Shipping, through attendance on several HSE committees and sub-committees. This has given BML the opportunity to play a central role in shaping the Chamber’s policies and initiatives with respect to health and safety on UK-owned ships. We are a signatory to the Chamber of Shipping Safety Culture charter, which demonstrates our commitment to setting and achieving stated goals in this area. Based around lifesaving rules and the HSE’s safety climate indicators, incorporating strong health and wellbeing content – thereby taking a holistic approach to caring for BML employees, and putting the ‘H’ right at the front HSE.
We also recently rolled out the UK Health and Safety Executive’s Safety Climate Tool survey to all employees, which will be used to shape our future safety strategy and safety culture initiatives. We have established business relationships with several senior people in the HSE’s Science and Research Centre while doing so. Our efforts in this area were recently praised by the HSE’s Head of the Centre of Organizational Health & Wellbeing.
We are especially proud to be assisting the Human Element team at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to tailor the Safety Climate Tool more closely for merchant shipping.
For a young company, it is exciting to be able to continue the Bibby tradition as a ‘key player’ in the UK shipping industry by working with other companies, organisations and regulators to drive continual improvement in marine safety.
